So master’s sun ends in a week and heirs shall begin. As a sort of tribute to the buzzword of this season : ghosts and the heiress of the poor : Park shin hye, I dug out a KBS drama special to recap : Don’t worry, I’m a ghost. Umm, not to be a buzzkill but being/seeing a ghost is a valid cause of worry right????
So, checkout my recapping skills and give me feedback. Don’t hesitate to tell me you suck and you should quit. I’ll be waiting……..
We see a couple fighting in a car over the man’s driving skills. She keeps shouting at him, he gets mad and starts arguing *On a side note most of us hate backseat driving but this man is as dumb as they come.* He takes his eyes off the road and BAM! he hits a pedestrian who suddenly ran out in front of the car.
They panic and we cut to a doctor asking a seemingly fine man questions like numbers and names of stuff mixed with personal questions all the while the patient is seen visibly deflating right in front of our eyes. We all know where this is going right??? Yes, pat yourself on your back if you said amnesia.
He goes to the police station to find out his identity after the doctor says he’s fine * and I say yeah, totally except for the part where he doesn’t even know his name*. He gives his fingerprints and waits for the results *By the way don’t cops have only the finger prints of criminals???*
Out of nowhere he hears someone calling Lee Moon Ki (Bong tae gyu) and looks sidewayys to come face to face with a pretty girl sitting on the seat beside him (Park Shin Hye) who starts reciting his personal details like age, lack of family and address. He stares at her like she’s crazy until she has to tell him to answer the lady cop *I’m going to call her this for the entire show* who’s calling him.
He freaks out when he hears her reciting the same details and speaks the address in chorus. Lady cop asks if his memory is coming back and he starts asking about the girl and jumps about like a crazy person Everyone’s staring and we see a translucent shin hye mouthing bye while floating in the air outside a window. CUTE!
Moon ki enters what is presumably his house and starts to freak out when he can’t remember anything. There’s something touching about the way he looks at everything in wonder and then throws a bunch of papers in frustration. He sits dejectedly on the couch and takes off the bandage on his head. *Thank god, he got rid of that ridiculous prop*

He’s asleep on a couch when he starts having weird dreams with him facing a person in the dark only to come face to face with himself smiling creepily when there’s a flash of lightning. *Okayyy, that was really creepy. Shivers*
He wakes up with a start only to flip over and see a girl floating above him. She smiles sweetly at him while he looks like he’s just seen a ghost *pun intended.* He stutters and asks if he’s dreaming and she shakes her head no, ‘I’m a ghost’. He decides he’s dreaming and starts praying while she stares at him in disbelief and keeps telling him it’s not a dream. At least she gets him to move forward into thinking it’s a nightmare. Hehehe.
He slowly opens his eyes and sighs in relief that she’s gone when he jumps at the sound of her voice moving around in his house and giving him instructions about washing his smelly clothes.Heh. She does some ghostly sliding over to answer his question of who she is with a taunting “Try to remember” . He falls off the couch and staggers his way to the door to escape. He is outside the door when she asks him where he’s going at this time.
He turns and sees her sitting on his roof and freaks. She just waves and he’s running away in a panic. She calls him ajhusshi with her hair covering her face sadako style. He screams, she screams and then waves at him. He starts running away from her going back and forth looking drunker than the sloshed men staring at him. He tries going into houses and has cats and dogs make noises at him.It starts to feel like a looney tunes show and then we see him acting weird while the doctor assures him its due to anxiety and that amnesia is temporary *Looks like I missed drama medicine 101 – all about amnesia class*
He tries to explain and we see her playing with the doc’s stethescope sitting beside him. She then follows him onto a bus where he tries ignoring her all while giving himself a pep talk that it’s all temporary and will go away soon. She’s miffed and even more so when he continues acting like he didn’t hear her. he ignores her advice of holding onto the bar and falls when the bus takes a sharp turn. While people snigger around him he looks at her and she repeats his thoughts aloud. She tells him to follow if he wants to know if she’s really a ghost. He looks like he’s debating it for a split second and yells, “Ajhusshi, STOP!”
He follows her to her own funeral and sits dully while she acts as if nothing is wrong and starts eating when a woman who used to work with the girl comes and thanks him for coming even when he’s busy. They hear people gossiping about her being stabbed during a burglary and he asks if getting revenge for her is what she wants from him. Shouting at no one earns him strange looks and he covers his face in embarassment.

She tells him to regain his memory and they go to get his phone repaired. She says she’ll be sticking with him and they are told that the phone was damaged beyond repair and all the data is lost. She sighs that even his phone lost its memory *hehe* They get a new phone and it rings immediately. The caller yells at moon ki and we find out that he’s the boss of the courier service where moon ki and his brother jin soo work. Both have been missing work and moon ki is immediately sent on a delivery.
She rides behind him and he keeps telling her to sit properly *Dude, she’s a ghost*. He stutters and delivers while she primps and on the drive back they’re at a rail crossing where she points out his habit of tapping fingers while waiting. She starts telling him all about himself and his habits and we see them following her words and confirming them. It’s a little confusing because we see them following another moon ki but I guess it is some sort of symbolism.
They end up at a convenience store where he pretends to speak on the phone to avoid looking crazy. When she shows him a drink he buys daily he accuses her of conning him because of his amnesia and that even without memory there’s a thing called taste. Just then the shopgirl comes and gives him his “usual” and wonders how he can drink the same thing everyday. She taunts his taste while he hangs his head in shame. He wonders how she knows all that about him and she points to her flower shop straight across the store.
While talking to her they get into an accident and end up at the place he got hit by the car. Looks like flashes of his memory are coming back as he starts retracing his footsteps and ends up outside a police crime scene. Why do I feel like I know where this is going???? We see a creepy man with a black cap following moon ki but he feels a bit familiar. Yeon hwa *That’s our ghost lady shin hye, since I didn’t mention it till now* has been silently following him and now she tells him it’s the place she used to live. Moon ki has flashes of memory and remembers blood, her body and a knife. He asks her to tell him why exactly she came to him and what he was doing here that day. She tells him that it was her birthday and that he was the last person to see her alive, he’s the witness to her case. *WHATTT???? She was killed on her birthday, that’s doubly upsetting especially after seeing that beautiful blue cake box sitting untouched. PPL anyone??? * She comforts him while he has a freak out and that’s where lady cop finds him.
She takes him to the police station and he tells her that he remembers seeing her killer and being chased but doesn’t remember his face. Lady cop notes his strange behavior when he keeps looking sideways at empty air. She tells him to come back with something concrete and as he leaves we see the face of the creepy stalker guy who has followed him here, his brother Jin soo. *I called it* Our duo relocate to the office and moon ki finds out that he left early that day when he asks his boss about missing records. He keeps pestering her to tell him why he went to her house until she says okay but asks him to do her a favor.
Cut to both of them at the han river, where she keeps going towards him and he keeps backing away. She asks him to jump and when he says no pushes him in. A homeless guy sees this, sighs and covers his face with papers to lie down. Don’t know why but that was morbidly funny. He shouts that he can’t swim. She says he can and that this has happened before.
In the water he sees himself being pulled up by yeon hwa dressed in a school uniform. We rewind a bit and see that young yeon hwa is talking to her dead father and a little ways off moon ki leans over as if he finds something in the water fascinating and falls in. She jumps in after him and looks like she herself needs rescue. He stares at her confusedly and when she comes to both are lying on the bank. She thinks he’s faking it because of embarrassment and reads him the riot act for trying to commit suicide. She tells ajusshi that since she saved his life he owes her and walks a bit. He lifts up his head and then again plays unconscious when she turns back to check on him suspiciously.
She was apparently always curious about how he was doing and luckily on the day she was giving out roses to celebrate the opening of her shop she met him outside the convenience store. She nags him that he didn’t seem to remember her, “this beauty and the saviour of your life”. Her words not mine. He smiles at her antics and she asks him to smile as big as he wants to like her because his smile is pretty and that she liked him. Uh Oh, awkward alert. He wonders why she didn’t tell this from the start and she says she wanted him to remember her without having to tell him. Awwww.
They relocate to his house where he acts the gentleman and opens and closes doors for her. *Except it’s totally not necessary*He feels awkward and goes to get a drink and she asks for soju. She says cheers! and without waiting for him to clink glasses gets started. She looks drunk and lays with her head on the table. So, he leans close and wonders if ghosts can get drunk. *great question but maybe that’s the special power of soju…. any opinions* She opens her eyes startling him and says that’s impossible followed by asking him if he wants to date her and he promptly blushes severely and asks her what she’s doing. CUTE!!!! She then proceeds to give reasons why it’ll be good for him. My personal favorite is “Since you’re the only person who can see me I can’t cheat on you.” He looks like he’s falling for it and true enough he runs outta the house and tells himself to calm down and then starts scolding himself that he can’t fall for a ghost. Post his pep-scolding he decides that these are the side effects of the accident. Pffftttt…..you silly boy and your pathetic attempts at denials. But then he slowly starts to smile. Awww.
Next morning lady cop shows up at his house to follow up with more questions. She asks if there’s anyone in the house due to his fidgeting. Sharp one, isn’t she. She questions what he was doing at yeon hwa’s house and on hearing that he was invited to her birthday celebration she questions their relationship. Since he can’t remember anything else she gives him a little food for thought asking him why is it that he only remembers yeon hwa if she was not an important person in his life.
At the flower shop the coworker aunt from the funeral tells him to deliver yeon hwa’s last flower arrangement and pass on the message to the regular customer. When he goes to deliver it’s an old age home where grandmas greet his arrival eagerly and thank him for the flowers. When he says he only delivers , all of them ask him to thank the sender and then one grandma remains behind and gives him advice on how to woo the flower shop girl. Hehehe. She tells him true love happens with the person who writes the letter and also the person who delivers it, a thing she knows about since grandpa used to deliver anonymous love letters written by him.
It seems to affect him as he goes home and tries logging in to the flower shop’s account and after several tries gets the password right. It’s “Kim Yeon Hwa” and he finds that he was the regular weekly customer who always asked her to use her favorite flowers for the bouquet. He starts having flashbacks of when he used to hang around watching her work before taking the flowers to deliver when he hears her complaining that a flower shop owner never receives a bouquet even though she loved flowers.
He comes down, finds her waiting and tells her he took some time off from work. They go on a date looking at accessories, eating ddeokbeokki and end up at a movie. When a lady tries putting her bag into a seemingly empty seat, he argues that he paid for the ticket while her handbag didn’t. *Did anyone else think of kim joo won of secret garden who decides to book an entire row the next time?????* . Yeon hwa is touched but says she would’ve been fine and he is indignant on her behalf. It’s a ghost movie and she keeps cringing and covering her face while he looks amused that she’s afraid of ghosts. He keeps smiling at her when she says she’s a person too, just that she’s dead. Ahem, that’s kind of the whole concept of ghosts lady. And then we see the bag lady complain to her friend that he keeps smiling at her. Hahaha. By the way, is it just me or does the bag girl look like Park se young *the queen in Faith and school 2013*
They go grocery shopping while he carts her around picking all the stuff she wants. He refuses to buy fuzzy fruits when she asks for peaches. She says he’s doing it because peaches are costly and the camera pans over to the price board showing us that it’s completely true. Hehehehe. He keeps cooking and she keeps tasting. He starts nagging her to wait and she keeps sneaking in bites. He lights candles on a cake. Awww he is celebrating her birthday and paying respects both at the same time. And there’s the peaches I knew he couldn’t say no to her. When she’s unable to blow out candles, he tells her to stop acting weak and this time blows them out along with her.
She’s touched and thinks asking him to remember is unreasonable. He takes her to han river probably to confess that he does remember. *I’m cursing at him. You fool nothing god ever happens at the han river.* He has a bouquet of her favorite flowers *he remembered……squeal*. He sees someone creeping behind him and jumps at them, rolling around and finally seeing Jin soo who asks him what he thinks he’s doing and why he’s avoiding him. He tells him that they will be set if they can ride this out and tells him not to do anything foolish. It doesn’t look good to me and to add to my paranoia we see the trashed bouquet on the ground.
He goes home, finds old pictures and goes to the orphanage where the director tells him to take care of his brother no matter what. He goes to yeon hwa’s place in a daze where he starts to remember things, he sees his brother pick up the knife and say nothing happened and you don’t know anything. The same words he said yesterday at han river. He meets yeon hwa who is thankful for all he’s done and he says he’ll catch the person who did this to her. She tells him remembering her would be enough but he tells her to stay till he remembers everything. Ohh, he’s acting like he doesn’t remember to make her stay. He moves to wipe her tears but stops.
Next morning he’s worried when he doesn’t see her. He tells her to stay while he goes to identify the suspect. WOW police here seem competent and actually do the work, a rarity in drama land. They show him cctv footage of jin soo who’s a suspect in another case. He was apparently stupid enough to use the checks he stole from yeon hwa’s home. He says jin soo is the culprit and we see yeon hwa listening in on the conversation. cops are on stakeout and wonder if moon shik’ll be fine. Lady cop says he insisted on catching the killer himself and comments on the cold and we see yeon hwa sitting in the car with them. Jin soo comes, sees cops, tries to flee and is tackled by moon ki. I take it back about cops in this show being competent. It’s a disaster.
He starts hitting him wailing that he could’ve been happy if not for jin soo. Cops and yeon hwa watch the show but when moon ki asks why he killed her he yells that you did it. WTH ……………Give me a moment. Everyone has the same face as me…..jaw drop.Cops come and arrest both of them. They take him away and pass right through her , both are crying unable to get over the shock.
Next day in handcuffs and masks both brothers are bought in for a reenactment and there’s a media frenzy. Lady cop tells moon ki that they’re doing this because even if his mind doesn’t his body will remember and puts a model weapon in his hands. He starts remembering snippets from the day she invited him to her birthday with the explanation I might like you. He was going to pick up flowers for her when his brother comes and asks him to accompany him somewhere and it seems that moon ki was also involved in something shady but turned over a new leaf. After lots of arguing and begging they go to a place wearing baseball caps and gloves. Any ideas??? BINGO, it’s yeon hwa’s place jin soo wants to burgle because she acts too nice and smiles all the time. His words not mine. He’s very bitter saying she can stare at flowers all day due to her parents. Moon ki tells him to put the checks back and they fight and jin soo takes a knife out.
They hear footsteps, wear masks and hide and yeon hwa comes in. Jin soo catches her and threatens her with his knife, moon ki fights him to protect her and gets thrown to the ground along with the knife. He picks the knife up and at the exact same moment yeon hwa is hit by jin soo for struggling and falls smack dab on the knife. Moon ki watches in horror as she dies.
In a jail cell, moon ki sits while jin soo sleeps. He now has all his memories back and thinks about their first meeting where he had to rescue her from the water. He was going for the all healing CPR when she spit/coughed water onto his face. He immediately laid down next to her and acted unconscious all through her rant and picked up her student ID when she left.He even watched secretly when she comes to pick up the ID he left at the security. He even recognized her on the day of her shop’s opening.
He’s crying when she comes and tells he should never have gone with his brother, he should’ve just come to her. And then she says if she knew it would be like this she wouldn’t have come to him. He watches on his knees as she walks away before disappearing into what looks like gold dust and breaks down sobbing pitifully.
Cut to the doctor and lady cop discussing him while he’s in what looks like an isolation room in a psychiatric ward. I don’t like exposition fairies so this’ll be short. Apparently moon ki loved her too much so his brain tried to erase his memories of killing her but because he loved her too much he couldn’t forget her. He says ghost or delusion moon ki is not yet ready to let her go. We see him and her sitting side by side and when moon ki asks her if she’s fine, out comes our title “Don’t worry, I’m a ghost”. He smiles like a loon and credits roll.
I think to torture us with the what if ‘s but along with the credits there’s another memory of cute, innocent mutual stalking which explains how she knows what he drinks everyday. As rain starts suddenly, he comes to help shift her things inside the shop and afterwards cracks a tiny smile. She tells him to smile as big as he wants to just like her because “Ajhusshi has a pretty smile” *remember anyone?* And the last shot is of him turning to a side with huge smile on his face, similar to hers.
This show reeled me in with false promises of a bubbly ghost and an amnesiac who falls in love with her. But since this is my first recap, it will always be a fond memory. And it also led to the discovery of bong tae gyu who for god knows what reason reminds me of Hwang jung min. Anyone else felt the resemblance???? I don’t have anything more profound to say than “Don’t worry, It’s already over”, you may take what you can from that statement 😉 Now that I’ve ended my first recap, *successfully or not is yet to be decided* I understand that it’s a tough job especially if you don’t have any idea of what you’re supposed to do. Any way I’m thankful for all the recappers out there and shukmeister of shukmeister.wordpress.com who’s taken up the daunting project of putting all recaps in one website. Good luck, shukie. 🙂
P.S. : I struggled a lot and figured out the correct way to insert images only at the end so, this post is a bit inconsistent. Bear with me, it won’t be happening again.
